Nest Of The Bulbul





                        A pair of bulbuls decided to build a nest in one of my ferns. My plants were actually rather small and were placed at a quiet place along the common corridor.When I first noticed something in my fern, I thought someone was using my potted plant as a rubbish bin. There were bits and pieces of cloth plus dried leaves. Luckily, I did not destroy it. The next day, I was amazed to see a nest taking shape. After that I was rewarded each day to find a new wonder taking place each day. First, the mother laid an egg. The next day, there were two and then there were three.About 9 days later, the first egg hatched. I was throughly thrilled. The other two hatchlings followed. Then someting dreadful happened. The day after the last hatching appeared, I saw that there were only 2 hatchlings left. Sad to say, only one was left the following day. It seems only the fittest would survive, so it's anyone's guess as to what happened to the other 2 hatchlings. The remaining hatchling grew very fast and was hopping around in 4-5days. After that it disappeared so  most probably, it flew away.

Lovely Pineapple

What do you think this is at  first glance? Look closely and you will realise that it is actually a pineapple.

 Yes a very young pineapple where you can see some 'petals' - part of the flower. I think it looks lovely at

this stage, unlike the prickly fruit when the pineapple ripens.

Durian flowers


 

 

Durian Flowers growing in bunches in a HDB estate -These pictures were taken in Lorong Lew Lian. The trees were planted there by Mr Ho Kah Leong on 5 September 1995 which happened to be Tree-Planting Day. 

                                      Aren't birds clever? Look at this bird nest and you will agree with me. It's wonderful to see that the birds are able to build a nest for their eggs from scrap materials. The birds don't seem to be too frightened of people because they have built their nest right in front of the school, just next to the front entrance.The nest is actually hanging on a branch of a potted plant. This picture was taken on 26 April 2012. Will the mother bird lay any eggs in it? If nobody disturb the nest, I guess it will.

                                           Guess what kind of tree this is? If you can take a good look at it, you may see some fruit on it. I didn't quite believe my eyes because this is a chiku tree. I have never come across such a gigantic chiku tree. I guess this must be a pretty old tree though it still bears fruit. Didn't find out whether the chikus are tasty but I can tell you where to find the tree. It is in the compound of St Joseph's Church at Bukit Timah

Cable Cars at Genting

This scenic view of the cable cars was taken from a hotel window in Genting. It was the first sunny morning of my December visit so I decided to snap some pictures. The beautiful sky with the white clouds made a perfect background for the cable cars.

National Day 2011

National Day 2011

For National Day 2011 I had the oppurtunityof watching the parade live. It was really thrilling especially as I have never been to Marina Bay where the parade was held. It was simply fantastic.
There were many exciting moments but my favourite was the fireworks. Words cannot describe the beautiful spectacle that lit up the sky. You have to be there to get this first hand experience. Its amazing and fabulous. HAPPY BIRTHDAY SINGAPORE!

Pictures of Sun Moon Lake Taiwan. Lady pilot who took us on on a leisure cruise. This punky lady is a mother of six who ferries tourists on a leisurely cruise while hubby stays at home to mind the kids. The Sun Moon Lake is a popular scenic spot so called because the southern side looks like the sun and northern side looks like the moon.

Scenes of places in Taiwan: Left is a beautiful waterfall in Wulai.The picture of the washroom is taken at Taipeh International Airport. The picture below shows fascinating rock formation, a geological wonder at Yeliu Stone Park.

This pear tree was grown in Tennesee and together with several more was brought to Singapore for the Garden Festival 2010, to form a perimeter for an exhibit titled 'Hortus Inculus' which means 'The Interior Garden.' This exhibit is one of the many attractions there.

I viisited the Garden Festival 2010 and found this fruit at the Nature Society Booth. This is an interesting fruit. After eating it, lemon taste sweet instead of sour. Isn't it strange?

the road is like dicing with death.
There is an everflowing stream of traffic-especially scooters and motor-cycles that a guide told us to just close our eyes and cross. It really is a harrowing experience.




On the left is a picture of a jackfruit tree growing just outside Cu Chi Tunnels(built in 1948) by the Vietkong. The tree is laden with fruit.

My Favourite Mural

I took the photograph (on the left) of these colourful parrots at our zoological gardens in Mandai. They are very beautiful to look at.

At the top is a mural ( a painting on the wall ) of various parrots and cockatoos found in a jungle. This mural has been painted by professionals and they have made our school beautiful indeed. You'll think that this beautifully painted mural might be my favourite, Afterall, it's right out of nature. But you are wrong.

The one that holds a special place in my heart is the mural behind the flagposts, at the front of Hatsuyume Square. It has the picture of a rainbow, some birds and the words, 'COURAGE AND SINCERITY' (See picture below ) You may say , 'But that mural is not as beautiful as the one of the parrots.' Then, why is it my favourite. The words, ' COURAGE AND SINCERITY' happens to be our school motto. Did you know that the motto was crafted by the pioneer teachers of Anderson Primary when the school opened in 2000? And why is it my favourite? No prizes for the right answer though. You see, I was one of a team of 8 teachers who painted the mural. We are not professional artists but I think we did a good job. I am definitely proud of my part in creating and painting this mural. And every school day, when the weather is good, hundreds of pupils will face the mural to sing' Majulah Singapura'.

My Happy Fish

Hello boys and girls. Do you like the picture of this fish? I call it 'My Happy Fish' because it has bright colours and is swimming among many friends. The boy who coloured this underwater scene is Ian Soh from class 2.6. He was only given the outline of the fish. I asked the class to decorate the fish and make it colourful. I also told them to try and add some other sea creatures to make the background interesting. Ian has drawn some lovely sea creatures to accompany his happy fish. There are 5 tortises, smaller fish, 3 crabs and a starfish. Well done, Ian!

The Hibiscus

Both the pictures are Hibiscus flowers. The orange one has single petals. The plant is growing near the butterfly garden near the place where the Lower Primary pupils sometimes play "slide".

The pink one has petals that resemble a rose because it is multi-layered. This hibiscus plant is growing near the ledge just outside the LSP Room. You can see the plant if you are playing on Hatsuyume Square facing the main door of the DAS.

Animal Masks

These are some of the masks made by the pupils of Primary One. The ones on the top are done by P1.5 and those below by P1.1

The Five-Dollar Tree

Do you find this tree familiar? If you do, can you remember why? You would have seen this picture every now and then. Think! Have seen Mummy or Daddy paying for things with a five-dollar Singapore note.? The picture of this tree appears on the reverse of the note. That is why this tree is sometimes known as the five-dollar tree. Now, guess where this tree is found. I took this picture when I accompanied the Primary Two pupils on their Learning Journey to the Botanical Gardens last year. This Tembusu tree has been identified as a heritage tree.

The Asparagus Plant

Have you eaten asparagus before? It can be fried with prawns or meat or even just plain chopped garlic. You can use it in salads too. Even though the ones we eat are imported from Thailand, Australia or China, the picture above was actually taken at our very own Mandai Zoological Gardens. When you next go on a visit to the zoo, take a look at the tropical plants section and you may just spot an asparagus shoot growing up. Look closely at the centre of the picture - that's the part of the asparagus plant that we eat.

My Favourite Alphabet

Another drawing done by Shao Jun is this alphabet 'A'. I think it is very brightly coloured and done in an unusual style. I love the heart in the centre. It symbolises love- love for family members-parents and siblings, relatives and friends, school and our country Singapore and I hope like me , nature and the environment. If all of us care for Mother Earth, the world would be a better place for all of us to live in. So remember to do your part-Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
